This pivotal study has identified and assessed potential decarbonisation pathways in the Malaysian palm oil industry, based on its technological maturity and financial feasibility. The study can be a reference point for the palm oil industry to explore the numerous pathways in their journey towards carbon neutrality and net zero.
The study’s findings highlighted the significant progress and future opportunities for the Malaysian palm oil industry in its journey towards net zero emissions:
- Due to its MSPO certification requirements, current technologies and industry best practices, the Malaysian palm oil industry has achieved significant reductions in its greenhouse gas emissions, compared to the global average.
- The Malaysian palm oil industry can further reduce its GHG emissions and achieve carbon neutrality by combining existing practices with new biomass conversion technologies and pathways, via briquetting, pelletisation, composting, fermentation, gasification, and pyrolysis of its biomass feedstocks.
- Key recommendations were provided to facilitate the transition of the Malaysian palm oil industry towards net zero emissions.
