In every hectare of oil palm, a pole holding a
biological trap is put in place. The trap is
filled with 'pheromones' a chemical that
   acts to attract rhinoceros beetle

Oil palm seedlings are regularly nurtured in a
   well-maintained nursery. After 12 to 18
months, only the best selected batch will

    Inarguably, oil palm plantations provide
shelter and food to animals. This pair of
wild monkeys caught socializing on a
camera helps lengthen the list of animals
    found in oil palm plantations.

guarding its host from intruding enemies are
commonly found in an oil palm plantation.
On average, a hectare of oil palm field
   accomodates 136 - 160 trees
The beauty of palm oil lies in its fruits. A
single palm oil fruit gives two different types
of oils; palm oil from its flesh (mesocarp) and    palm kernel oil from its seeds ...

Cross-breeding the Deli dura variety of oil    palm with the Pisifera created a new type    of palm called the Tenera. The new Tenera    palms boosted average crop yields by 25%.      A mid morning shower in the nursery keeps    young palms thriving. Nearly ready for    planting, the oil palms have been meticulously    nurtured for 15 months.      Malaysia's oil palms are the world's most    productive vegetable oil crop, yielding an    average of 10 times more oil per hectare
   than soybeans.

The tranquil estates of Malaya became    battlefields during World War II. But oil palm    fruits were still harvested during the    Japanese Occupation.  In fact, palm oil was a    valued source of dietary fat and many people    supplemented their regular diet with daily    doses of crude palm oil.      A typical planter's residence.      Palm oil has been used for at least 5,000    years. This photograph depicts the    original five steps Africans used to estract    the oil from the fruit - sterilisation,    threshing, digestion, pressing and    clarification.
